Project details
Transitioning a heritage church to incorporate an architecturally designed early learning centre presented a challenge for 505. The result is an award-winning success.
The team took on every aspect of construction – setout, earthworks, drilling and piling. Closed since 2013 for seismic safety reasons, the entire church needed earthquake strengthening, requiring regular monitoring of movement.
With sustainable and sensitive design, and 505’s detailed craftsmanship, heritage and contemporary successfully weave together. Bricks matched from demolition sites in Christchurch transition old and new spaces. Embankments conceal basement car parks and the lush green roof incorporates the centre into the environment.
The team of 15 carpenters who have worked together for more than a decade, worked solidly and despite its complexities, the project was completed within its 12 month schedule. Their dedication produced beautifully engaging educational and play spaces.
“It was a full-on year pushing as hard as we could to get the job done, so it was a rewarding moment when we won best heritage building in the 2019 Property Industry Awards.”
